The selected Health Tip is summarized below.  An audio clip of the tip as presented by Dr. Leah on the Chat With Women radio show is available at the end of the tip.

Fiber - Do you get enough?  Why is it good for you?

"Do you get enough fiber?  Chances are you don't.

We need about 25 to 30 grams of good quality fiber daily.

Some of the benefits of fiber include:

~ making you feel more full so you eat less;

~ regulates blood sugar levels so you don't feel as hungry;

~ binds onto carbohydrates in the gut and decreases the absorption of those carbohydrates so you get lower blood sugar levels; and

~ cleans out the colon to keep you regular.

Eat apples, oat bran, veggies, legumes and whole grains to get good amounts of fiber daily.

When increasing the fiber in your diet make sure to do it slowly so you don't get a lot of gas, and digestive disturbances such as diarrhea or constipation.  Drink lots of water too!!"
